Abstract

Sustainability claims are now a central part of how organisations communicate with customers, investors, employees, regulators, suppliers and communities. When these claims are accurate and supported by evidence, they can build trust, demonstrate progress and strengthen an organisation’s reputation. When they are vague, overstated or unsupported, they can create the risk of greenwashing, even when the original intention was positive.

In most cases, greenwashing does not begin with deliberate deception. It can arise when organisations want to communicate the good work they are doing but do not yet have the data, structure or confidence to evidence it properly. Equally, the growing number of sustainability frameworks, disclosure requirements and stakeholder expectations can make responsible communication feel complex and intimidating. This has contributed not only to greenwashing risk, but also to green hushing, where organisations avoid talking about sustainability altogether because they fear scrutiny or feel their progress is not enough.

This whitepaper explores why evidence is now essential to credible corporate social responsibility. It considers the role of strategic sustainability data, including Life Cycle Assessments, Business Carbon Assessments and biodiversity footprinting, in strengthening environmental and social claims. It also highlights the role of independent accreditation in validating responsible business activity.
