Onnec Case Study
In this case study Onnec partnered with Tunley Environmental to gather data on their suppliers' sustainability credentials for a clearer view of Onnec's Scope 3 emissions. In addition to the supplier audit and survey, Tunley has conducted Business Carbon Assessments for the years 2023 and 2024.
After conducting a Business Carbon Assessment, Onnec wanted to gain a deeper understanding of their Scope 3 emissions, through a supplier engagement survey.
Onnec Case Study
Onnec is a trusted partner in IT Infrastructure, bringing visions to life with expert and design, seamless installation and tailored operational support services. With more than 30 years of experience, they have successfully completed complex infrastructure projects in some of the world's most challenging environments.
Onnec were looking to not only achieve and comply with SECR, the Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting, but to proactively improve the overall environmental position as a business. For the years of 2023 and 2024, Onnec had Business Carbon Assessments (BCA) completed by Tunley Environmental to better understand their Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. From these assessments, they found their largest portion of emissions came from Scope 3 and their supply chain, from this they now had the next steps on what they needed to do to achieve their environmental goals and implementing reduction initiatives. This led onto the undertaking of their supplier engagement survey to see where their suppliers are and what they are currently doing to also reduce their environmental impact.
In 2025, Tunley’s Dr Luan Ho helped Onnec with their Supplier Engagement Programme and helped to develop a supplier survey for Onnec to distribute to their suppliers. This survey enabled Onnec to collect a comprehensive dataset on their suppliers purchases and identified the key contributors to carbon emissions within their supply chain. Tunley analysed the Scope 3 data to quantify the embodied carbon emissions associated with materials and products purchased by Onnec. Through this analysis, Tunley and Onnec were able to identify the key suppliers responsible for the most intensive materials and products. From these findings, the supplier survey was created to include questions specific to their carbon credentials, including; carbon reporting, waste management practices and responsible sourcing policies. Among the invited participants, a total of 60% responded to the survey, of which 78% have completed their own carbon reporting, 100% have formal sustainability policies already in place, and 67% have conducted a sustainability audit of their own supply chain.
The findings from their BCA, SECR Support have proved invaluable to Onnec and the “Supplier Engagement Survey in particular, was a standout piece of work, as it allows them to keep their heads above their competitors and show initiative when looking upstream”, as stated by Oran O’Kane, the Environmental and Safety Manager at Onnec. Oran mentions the benefits of working with Tunley and that it has followed praise from their supply chain on being proactive in emissions reduction and opening new communication channels to further strengthen relationships.
We asked Oran, ‘How valuable has the relationship been?”, with his response expressing that “the process was seamless between Onnec’s and Tunley’s, it was a fantastic team that we got to work with, the collaborative effort from both sides has made the process mutually beneficial and permitted the next step in Onnec’s environmental journey.”
