Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is a mandatory planning requirement in England introduced through the Environmental Act 2021, which amended the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.
Where mandatory BNG applies, development must deliver a minimum 10% increase in biodiversity value compared with the pre-development baseline, measured using the applicable Statutory Biodiversity Metric.
