Applying those principles to a particular organisation can involve decisions about boundaries, data quality, exclusions and recalculations.

Success should be defined before a licence is purchased. Useful measures might include a higher proportion of expected data submitted on time, reduced time spent gathering data, fewer unresolved gaps, easy access to evidence and more frequent review of targets. They should reflect the organisation's starting point and avoid unverified promises about accuracy or time saved.
Adoption is also important. A technically capable platform will deliver limited value if local contributors do not understand their responsibilities or revert to parallel files. Implementation should therefore include training, named ownership and a review after the first reporting cycle. The organisation can then decide whether workflows, support or data requirements need to change.
Sustainability management software creates value when it reduces disorganisation and helps people work from traceable information. It should make existing sustainability activity easier to manage, not create a separate technology project with unclear ownership.
