JLES Group, a leading adoption works contractor delivering multi-discipline civil engineering and infrastructure solutions across the UK, has made sustainability a key part of their strategic growth. To support their goal of becoming carbon neutral, JLES partnered with Tunley Environmental to understand, measure, and reduce their environmental impact and to create a clearly defined Roadmap to Net Zero.
JLES recognised that certain areas of their operations were contributing significantly to their carbon footprint but lacked the tools and insights to address them effectively. Since 2022, they’ve been actively offsetting their emissions, but they were looking for a measurable plan to reduce emissions at the source.
Their recent reaudit for the year of 2024 with Tunley Environmental was designed to ensure they remain on track toward their net zero goal and to help identify where further improvements could be made.
Tunley Environmental conducted a detailed Business Carbon Assessment for JLES, working closely with Cameron Neary, Business Support Manager at JLES. The assessment, led by PhD-level scientist Alejandra Zazueta Lopez, followed internationally recognised standards including ISO 14064 and the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, covering emissions across Scopes 1, 2, and indirect emissions from Scope 3 in the categories employee commuting, business travel and waste.
From this assessment they were able to:
By identifying the most impactful sources of emissions and implementing targeted reduction initiatives, JLES is making tangible progress towards long-term sustainability.
Beyond emissions reductions, the collaboration has allowed JLES to spread sustainability knowledge internally and Cameron states that, "From a business point of view, it has allowed us to put real, tangible things in place to help us with our environmental procedures." When asked if he would recommend the process to others, he added, "I think it's a really easy process. The data collection can be challenging, but Tunley helps take that burden away and makes sense of it all. So yes, definitely, definitely recommend."
Tunley would like to thank JLES Group for taking part in this case study, it was another successful outcome for all involved. We hope to continue to support them further on their sustainability journey.
